Pecans are the only tree nut that is native to the United States. The world’s largest supplier of pecans, storage of pecans preserves the quality and maintains the natural flavor and aroma of the nuts. Pecans should be stored in airtight containers, such as sealed plastic bags, at low temperatures to extend storage life. Storage at room temperature is not recommended because the pecan’s high healthy oil content will begin to degrade fairly soon.
Male & Female
- Pecan trees bloom in April and May depending on the variety
- The trees produce both male and female flowers, which grow on the same tree
- The trees are wind pollinated therefore, bees are not required
- The male flowers look like droopy green spikes and produce pollen
- Female flowers are smaller in size and consist of star-shaped spikes
- The female receives the pollen, and once fertilized, produce the pecan fruit
